実は色んな場面で使えるので、知っておくと便利ですよ。

は聞いたことがありますか？

先日たまたまテレビを見ていたときに耳にして、直訳してもちょっと意味がわからないな…と思い調べてみました。

結婚していない男女の間に生まれた子供のことを意味するそうです！

Ex: Tim`s parents eventually married, but he was born on the wrong side of the blanket.
ティムの両親は後々結婚したんだけど、ティムが生まれたときはまだ籍をいれてなかったんだよ。

Wrong side of the bed

Wrong side of the bed の方が頻繁に出てくる言い方です。

昔はベッドの左側から起きると何か悪いことが起きるかも…と言われていたことから、朝起きてから機嫌が悪いという意味で使われます。

Ex: Nothing has been going right for him today. He`s definitely woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
彼は今日は何をやってもうまくいかないみたいだ。ついてない日なんだろうな。

Ex: Did you get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning? You are a real grouch!
今日ずっと機嫌悪いわね。本当に気難しいわね。

Ex: What`s wrong with you? Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed?
今日はどうしたのよ？朝からずっと機嫌悪いね。

Ex: My husband got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, he`s very angry for no reason!
旦那が朝からずっと機嫌が悪くて、理由もないのに怒ってるんだよ。

Ex: I think the boss must got out of the wrong side of the bed.
上司の機嫌がずっと悪いんですよ。

Wrong side of someone

wrong side of someone は、

誰かに嫌われるとか機嫌を損ねるという意味で使います。

Ex: I don`t want to get on the wrong side of her because she could make things difficult for me.
彼女の機嫌を損ねると、いろいろややこしくなりそうで嫌なのよ。

Ex: She got on the wrong side of her boss after criticizing him in a meeting.
彼女は会議で上司を批判して、彼の機嫌を損ねてしまった。

Ex: Be careful not to get on the wrong side of her.
彼女の機嫌を損ねないように気を付けてね。

Ex: I know I am wrong side of the teacher because I handed in my report late.
レポートの提出を出すのが遅れちゃったから、先生に嫌われているのはわかってるんだ。

この表現はオフィスでも友達同士の会話、学校などでも使えますよね。

も初めて聞いた言い方だったので、ご紹介したいと思います。

～歳過ぎている、という意味で使われます。

Ex: Why is she dressing like a teenager when she is clearly the wrong side of 40.
彼女は明らかに４０過ぎなのに、なんでティーンエージャーみたいな格好をしてるんだろう？

Ex: How old is your boss?
あなたの上司って何歳なの？

　On the wrong side of 50, I`d say.
　５０歳すぎじゃないかな？
